NOT YOUR CHOICE!

An essential feature of democratic emancipation was and is the fight for gender equality and against existing norms. Many of the rights that have been hard-won over decades are now being called into question, threatened by a seemingly reinvigorated patriarchy and a radicalized political culture. People in politics, political initiatives or ideological interest groups are forcing a social discourse that aims to restrict women's self-determination, whether by interfering with reproductive rights or by adhering to traditional gender roles and images. Many of today's challenges, such as unbalanced representation in the legislature, have their roots in the past. Nevertheless, for many, the solution seems to lie in a return to outdated values and role models. This is reflected, among other things, in a misguided family policy that has failed to promote true equality and a balanced demographic development. As a result, the female body is increasingly being politically instrumentalized, while the pressure to conform to traditional role models and subordinate oneself is growing.

The exhibition NOT YOUR CHOICE! presents contemporary artistic positions that deal with the topics of equality, self-determination and gender roles, thus reflecting one of the central social discourses of our time.

NOVEMBER 5th, 2024

The US election night reflected in visual arts:
Installation, object, performance, theatre, live music, and much more.

On a night when anything seems possible, art and politics enter the same space, merging realities. As the US election results arrive in real time, a panorama is created - a reflection of the nation, an art-happening of opposites. Aesthetics meet doubt, line dancers meet power, cheerleaders meet wrestlers and protest choirs meet hula dancers. Two career politicians court for your vote while the broadcasting in the background switches tirelessly from projection to projection. A studio set center stage, showing scenes of polarized reality and the American dream. As the visions of America are counted, a play unfolds that reflects the breathlessness of democracy - a road trip through a country that must reinvent itself, whitnessed through the lens of cameras, live and raw. A ferryman steers through the night with loud words and vague thoughts until the big decision is made. For those willing to persevere, there is a midnight snack, endless hot coffee at a saloon bar, a place to doze off and hot showers in the morning before starting the new day after this journey through hope and dystopia, nostalgia and election victory.
